About ChainSafer:

ChainSafer, developed by Trend Micro, is a cybersecurity browser extension designed to protect users from fraudulent blockchain transactions.

By analyzing wallet addresses, website URLs, and transaction data, it provides real-time security assessments across Web2 and Web3 environments. The product leverages AI-trained fraud detection with 800K+ datasets and Trend Micro’s 37M+ malicious website database to offer faster and more accurate risk assessments.

Challenge

The rise of blockchain transactions in 2020-2021 also led to an increase in fraud within the space. Recognizing this, our team was formed to develop a product focused on enhancing transaction security and fraud detection.

Discover Process

We conducted workshops to define product positioning in the early stages of product research. I collaborated with the UX designer (who also acted as a part-time PM) to develop user personas and completed a competitive analysis, design mood board, etc.

Since blockchain scam detection tools were already common in the market, our research focused on defining who we were serving and what unique value we could offer.

By analyzing existing solutions and Web3 user concerns, we positioned ChainSafer as a more transparent and user-friendly alternative, leading to key UI design decisions like simplifying security alerts and separating Web2/Web3 risks.

Product Risk Level and detect Explanation

The team explored different models (3, 4, and 5 risk levels) and ultimately chose 4 levels after discussions between PMs and back-end developers.

The reasoning was that 3 levels wouldn’t provide enough granularity, while 5 would be overwhelming.

To make this clearer for users, we designed a color-coded system with an intuitive hierarchy, ensuring risks were easy to understand at a glance.
Dark Gary (No Detected Risk) – No known threats detected.
Light Cary (Caution) – One potential risk factor was identified.
Orange (Medium Risk) – Multiple risk factors detected.
Red (Extreme Risk) – Strong evidence of malicious intent.

This design follows established principles in color psychology and UX best practices, ensuring users can quickly assess risks with minimal cognitive load.

Detected Factors: Web2 & Web3

Web2: Suspicious URL Detection.
Web2 focuses on detecting suspicious URLs and scam websites. Trend Micro has over 15 years of experience managing blocklist databases, with a record of 37M+ detected malicious websites and 800K+ scam links used in training data to enhance detection accuracy.

Web3: Smart Contract & Transaction Risk Analysis.
Web3 detection covers high-risk signing methods, suspicious wallet addresses, malicious contracts, approval requests, and risky operations. With 61+ smart contract detection rules, the system helps protect Web3 assets by identifying and preventing fraudulent transactions.

UI library

To streamline design-to-development collaboration, I established a UI component library alongside the initial mockups.
I collaborated closely with engineers during the implementation phase to ensure the library’s structure, naming, and token usage were intuitive and aligned with dev conventions—making components easier to apply, adjust, and scale.design-development

Given the product's fast iteration cycles and numerous status indicators, the system significantly reduced design ambiguity and repetitive work, enabling faster releases and smoother cross-functional handoff.

Conculsion

This project was an exciting opportunity to be deeply involved in the entire product journey, from early persona research and competitor analysis to UI design, branding, and even hosting exhibitions to promote the product.

Following UI updates and active promotion at three industry exhibitions, the ChainSafer waiting list grew from 10 to 200 users in just 3 months—a 50% increase. This validated market interest and laid the foundation for future user engagement.

Beyond the design work, this experience reinforced how cross-functional collaboration, adaptability, and direct user interaction play a critical role in bringing a product to life. It was a fast-paced, dynamic process that required balancing business needs, technical constraints, and user experience and I truly enjoyed every moment of it.
